Patient engagement and retention has a huge impact on a healthcare startup. Hard to see strong outcomes without completed treatments. Hard to see strong growth without strong outcomes.
Every business with recurring revenue sees churn. Highest at first, dropping over time as patients and customers become "sticky" and the benefits of care start outweighing the drawbacks and side effect.
How you manage churn makes a huge difference. There are 3 major things most healthcare startups can try to reduce churn, increase LTV, and improve patient outcomes.
1. Solve for high-friction moments in the product and onboarding
Delivering a physical product or a medication? Ensure integration with 3rd party delivery services and order management - tell patients when to expect the package, when it ships, when it can be tracked, and when it is delivered. The more perishable or time-sensitive the product, the higher the contact rate near delivery dates. WISMO (where is my order) contacts are not high value customer conversations and added engineering/software spend is typically far offset by lower customer support volume and higher satisfaction & retention.
Scheduling a service? Ensure drip marketing flows remind patients of the date, any needed items like insurance information they must have, provide "wow" excitement moments like provider profiles, patient success stories, or a roadmap for care
2. Establish a trusted communications channel
- Ensure outbound caller ID is in place so patients see a recognizable business name instead of a phone number.
- Provide opt-in opportunities for text message / SMS reminders for services and push phone book info for easy saving.
- Omnichannel engagement compounds with the highest engagement rates coming from projects that use all available channels.
3. Engage proactively and regularly, before the high-churn moments
Identify the largest retention risk moments (after 1st delivery? Between the 3rd and 6th appointments? Around open enrollment?). We know from research that high quality clinical touches improve outcomes. A similar trend happens with support. High quality support interactions increase retention, even when they uncover problems.
A good proactive outreach program does a couple things. It asks for feedback, it offers education, and it handles common objections.
Bringing it together
Get all three of these right and they reinforce each other. Lower friction keeps patients moving through their care, a trusted channel keeps them reachable, and proactive outreach keeps them engaged through the exact moments where they are most likely to drop off. The payoff shows up everywhere that matters to a healthcare startup: more completed treatments, better outcomes, higher LTV, and the kind of compounding growth that only comes from patients who stay long enough to feel the benefits of their care.
